When Sci-fi meets real life

When we think of eerie symptoms and bizarre theories of unknown diseases and infections, our minds go to the Hollywood movies plotting near extinction of mankind or television series like the X-Files and the Twilight Zone alike. But in recent times, there is such a disease that many people are suffering, even dying from that is far from a motion picture. And the scariest thing; many doctors don’t even believe that this disease exists.

A very interesting conversation with Rene lead me to the Dallas Observer that featured an article speaking about this mystery disease called Morgellons.

Morgellons is a very controversial topic amongst the medical world. Many doctors don’t even believe that this disease is real, much less treat the sufferers. There are about 4,000 people in the United States alone that has the disease- and many more spread around the world. The symptoms range from fibers mysteriously growing from the skin, black sweat and paranoia. There’s also no cause or cure for the disease… Theories have circulated offering a cause to this nightmare; from drinking infected foreign waters to government conspiracy. However, none are proven to be true.

As for now, the dozen or so doctors who do believe this disease is real, are studying this bizarre sci-fi-like disease. And with the help of organizations, perhaps we can at least discover a cause and treat the symptoms.
