My Homemade Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt

A restaurant called Friendly’s was all over the news and internet yesterday after they announced a new burger on their menu named the Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt (pictured above). What makes this burger newsworthy is that it’s one of the unhealthiest meals ever dreamed up. It’s a cheeseburger made with a 100% angus beef patty, pepperjack cheese, lettuce and tomato and the traditional buns were swapped out with grilled cheese sandwiches.

This thing is ridiculous. It has 1,500 calories, 97 grams of fat (38 saturated), and 1,816mg of sodium. It has 54 grams of protein too, but that doesn’t matter when you put all of that other crap in your body.

I’ve never even heard of Friendly’s before and there aren’t any locations in Colorado, but I love grilled cheese sandwiches and I love cheeseburgers so I made my own. 😀

Here’s my recipe:

  • 4 Tbsp. of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter
  • 1 Hamburger Patty
  • 3 Kraft Slices
  • Shredded Lettuce
  • 1 Tomato Slice
  • 4 Slices Wheat Bread
  • 1 Slice Swiss Cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. Fat Free Mayonaise

I cooked my hamburger patty on a George Foreman grill, but you can cook it in a pan or on any sort of grill you have around. While the hamburger was cooking, I had the grill cheese sandwiches cooking on a pan on the stove. I spread butter on one side of each slice of bread, and then let the cheese melt on top of one slice before putting them together.

Once everything was done, I put the hamburger on top of one of the grilled cheese sandwiches, placed the swiss cheese on top (I didn’t have pepperjack cheese), spread some lettuce over it and placed a slice of tomato on top of that. Then I spread the mayonaise on the bottom of the other grilled cheese sandwich and completed the burger melt. Here’s what it looked like.

I calculated the nutritional value of my version and here’s what I came up with:

Protein = 51.75g
Cals. = 1,239
Fat = 81.1g
Sodium = 1,816mg

That’s about 100 calories per bite!

It was actually really good and if it wasn’t so unhealthy, I’d probably make it again. I used fat-free mayo, low-fat swiss cheese, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and wheat bread and this thing is still one of the most unhealthy things I’ve ever eaten. Maybe I’ll make another one next year.
